A dive into why we need logos.
Written by Andrea Duckworth

Logos have been around for thousands of years, going back to the ancient times. Since then, every company, big or small, and even just individual people trying to promote themselves, has a logo. Companies like Pepsi, Coca Cola, Amazon, and Disney all have iconic and/or recognizable logos that tie into their brands, and that is exactly the point of a logo.
The point of logos
The point of a logo is to create an image for the brand of a person or company or group. The role they play is to make the company stand out as its own thing and attract people to them. Logos make it so that you can demonstrate creatively what your company is about and what you stand for. Depending on the look of the design, whether it be more timeless like Coca Cola’s or more clean and modern like Apple’s, it will invoke a certain feeling to customers that could potentially attract them into becoming a client.

Example logo
As an example, the image above is a logo I myself have designed as part of an exercise in my logo and pictogram design class. As the designer of the logo, I chose the raccoon to represent me because of their curious and creative nature. I feel like I embody those traits as well to some degree. The illustration is much more simple and clean compared to the typography, which is bold and brash and somewhat messy. I did this as a way to create a design more interesting to look at while also representing my creativity. Both the clean and bold parts of the design also represent the styles I enjoy working in, as well as showing range in my design capabilities.
Overall
Logos were made to represent a company, person, or group in a way that gives a good and strong first impression. A good impression will bring people in and give them an idea on what you are offering before they can look into it themselves. Logos make it so that a company is recognizable and memorable the moment you see them. This will give them a long lasting good impression.
Overall, logos are very important for the identity and brand of companies, people, and groups alike. They create a lasting impressionable image on the public that can either deter or attract clients upon first glance.
